Brainwave States Explained: Delta, Theta, Alpha, Beta & Gamma
EEG research often groups oscillatory activity into broad frequency bands. These bands are useful descriptive tools, but they overlap across tasks and do not map cleanly onto single emotions or abilities.
Why bands are used
Delta activity is often discussed in relation to slow-wave sleep; theta with memory-related and internally focused processes; alpha with relaxed wakefulness and sensory processing; beta with active cognition and motor processes; and gamma with higher-frequency coordination.
Delta
Those summaries are simplifications. Brain function depends on location, timing, network interactions, and the task being performed.
Theta
Frequency-band labels are informative, but commercial claims that turn them into fixed personality or wealth categories go beyond the science.
Alpha
